Counselling for diversity

CULTURALLY SENSITIVE COUNSELLING

The UK is increasingly becoming home to people from all over the world, each coming with their own unique cultural, linguistic, religious and political background.

Why Culturally Sensitive Counselling is important?

When it comes to counselling, it is never one size fits all. Clients from other cultural backgrounds tend to already be struggling because of dificulties to adapt to their new life in the country, isolation and the language. Therefore, it is the counsellor’s responsibility to make the effort to work through their cultural differences. By being sensitive to my clients’ cultural and ethnic differences, I am able to help them overcome their traumatic experiences

How I work with different communities?

I respect clients’ differences and I have worked with clients, men and women, Muslims and non Muslims, from different ethnic backgrounds including people from the Middle East, North Africa and Asia. By being sensitive to my clients’ cultural and ethnic differences, I am able to help them overcome their traumatic experiences.

Working with people from such diverse, rich and unique backgrounds has been both rewarding and challenging. Clients come to sessions and each of them, depending on where they come from, use different modes of communication and have unique ways of relating to others.

My experience in working with diversity

I am a member of The Muslim Counsellor & Psychotherapist Network (MCAPN) and The Black, African and Asian Therapy Network (BAATN).

I am a Muslim woman of Arab and black descent. This means that I share many experiences with many different communities at the same time. I have worked with BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) communities for over 25 years. During this time, I have gained deeper understanding in how power imbalances can have adverse effects on individuals from different cultures including racism and islamophobia.

Additional languages

My ability to speak Arabic (All 24 dialects including North African and middle-eastern Arabic) and French in addition to English means that I am able to work with a wider number of clients from all parts of the world.

Meriem is a very caring person. She takes her work very serious. I worked with her previously and she offered good support to all her clients who suffered domestic abuse. She is a very good listener and therefore she offers great emotional support. She will offer you the right support that is adequate to your needs and she will follow your progress step by step. She will never jude you because she believes in you and knows it is never your fault. She is a good shoulder to cry on. Keep up the good work Meriem.
